Is it yī, yì or yí?
Start with the phrase.
For the basic quantity phrases in this guide, 一 is yí before a fourth-tone syllable and yì before first, second or third tone. Keep yī when saying the number alone or in an ordinal such as 第一. Check the construction first: the next-tone rule is not a rule for every occurrence of 一.

Choose a construction, then a tone
This guide focuses on ordinary quantity phrases: 一杯 yì bēi, 一瓶 yì píng, 一本 yì běn, and 一份 yí fèn. The following syllable determines the changed tone in those examples. 一 alone is yī, and 第一 is dì yī.
Other constructions need separate attention. For example, 一 can be unstressed in verb–一–verb patterns. Number strings, dates and time expressions also need their own context; do not apply this worksheet mechanically to all of them.
Rule reference: Yoyo Chinese's guide to 一. Our practice pinyin marks the spoken forms; dictionary spellings may retain yī.

Sort these before you say them
Use two columns on the worksheet: construction and following tone. For a quantity phrase, write the next syllable's tone, choose yì or yí, and then say the phrase. For the number alone or an ordinal, mark the context instead of forcing it through the quantity rule.
Start with the six prompts below. Cover the answers, write a decision, then reveal the key. This is our authored practice sequence, not a validated pronunciation test. The prompts are constructed examples rather than records of real learner mistakes.
- 一 + 杯 bēi: a cup
- 一 + 瓶 píng: a bottle
- 一 + 本 běn: a volume or book
- 一 + 份 fèn: a portion
- 第 + 一: first
- 一, said as a number on its own

Turn a written choice into a spoken task
Choose one quantity phrase from each side of your worksheet. Record it once without a model, then listen to a checked model and record it again. Save the two attempts separately. A correct written choice and a clear spoken contour are two different observations.
Ask a teacher or proficient speaker to mark a particular syllable if a recording is unclear. Write their correction in the feedback column and leave that column blank until it has actually been reviewed. Do not convert your own impression into an accuracy percentage.
For a next attempt, change only the noun or measure-word phrase you are practicing. Keep the task and recording setup steady so your notes remain interpretable. If you are uncertain about the construction, check that before doing more repetitions.

Use the result to plan tomorrow
If the construction was misidentified, make a short list of quantity phrases alongside ordinal examples. If the following tone was misremembered, look up that syllable and add the checked form to your notes. If your decision was right but pronunciation needs attention, bring the recording to a reviewer rather than adding more rules.
